Here’s your quick morning update on news in the sign industry:

1. The winners of the 18th annual Media Innovation Awards (MIAs), including several out-of-home (OOH) advertising campaigns, were announced earlier this month during a gala at The Carlu in downtown Toronto.

2. Canadian artist Douglas Coupland’s ‘Northern Lights,’ a 14,865-m2 (160,000-sf) light-emitting diode (LED) installation on the new Telus Sky Tower, will become Calgary’s biggest public art piece when it debuts in 2019.

3. The Sign Research Foundation (SRF) drew a capacity crowd to its first full-day university workshop, which coincided with the International Sign Association’s (ISA’s) Sign Manufacturing Day.

4. Gérald Collard, a 40-year veteran of neon lighting and glass art, continues to serve a niche market from his Montreal design studio, dubbed ‘Neon Family,’ in an old industrial building across from the Lachine Canal.

5. Most sign and graphic companies across Canada and the U.S. experienced positive sales growth in 2017, according to a survey by the Specialty Graphic Imaging Association (SGIA), suggesting the industry continues to be strong.
