Google Maps has limits: Why physical wayfinding still leads the way

A rescue on British Columbia’s Howe Sound Crest Trail is serving as a timely reminder that digital navigation has its limits. After hikers relied on Google Maps directions that estimated the challenging route would take just over five hours—less than half the time experienced hikers would expect—they became stranded and required assistance from Lions Bay Search and Rescue. The rescue team says Google Maps failed to account for the trail’s steep elevation, alpine terrain, scrambling sections, and difficult route-finding, warning that inaccurate trip planning can leave hikers without enough time, food, or water for the journey.

The power of physical wayfinding

The rescue underscores an important point: while tools like Google Maps continue to improve, they were never intended to replace the physical wayfinding systems that help people navigate real-world environments. From crowded urban streets to isolated mountain trails, digital navigation works best alongside clear, reliable signage that provides context, direction, and reassurance when conditions change or technology falls short.

That relationship is especially important in Canada, where people move through a wide range of environments—from dense city neighbourhoods to vast wilderness areas. In urban centres, wayfinding helps pedestrians, cyclists, and visitors navigate complex streetscapes, transit connections, and public spaces. In remote regions, it provides essential guidance through the country’s many trails, parks, and backcountry routes where a digital map may not capture the full reality of the terrain.

Cities like Vancouver and Toronto have continued to develop pedestrian-focused signage networks to help people navigate busy urban environments, while communities like Vernon are looking at high-contrast trail signage to improve visibility and safety across local outdoor networks.

High-contrast trail signage

Vernon, B.C., is one example of how municipalities are adapting wayfinding for the way people use their spaces today. Council recently approved new high-contrast directional signage for local trails, an initiative focused on improving readability, visibility, and accessibility for residents and visitors exploring the city’s growing trail system.

The city will fund phase one through existing capital and operating budgets and install new trail signs along the 30th Street and 29th Street active transportation corridor, from Highway 6 to Village Green Shopping Centre. The project supports planned 2026 safety and transit upgrades.

The phase will also replace aging signs at City Hall, the airport, the Community Services Building, and the Lakers Clubhouse. A $38,000 funding request will be submitted for phase two, which will focus on a city-wide signage implementation strategy. The project reflects a broader shift toward designing signage that works for everyone.

The Howe Sound rescue is a reminder that effective wayfinding must reflect the environment it serves. Physical signage is a critical tool—and one that digital technology can complement, not replace.
