Committee aims to raise $500K for ‘Oshawa’ sign for city’s centennial

A committee of residents in Oshawa, Ont., hopes to raise $500,000 to install a large, illuminated sign in the city’s downtown core. Their goal is to have it in place by next year, for Oshawa’s 100th birthday.
According to a report from Durham Radio News, the community-funded project is being supported by the city and spearheaded by a group known as the Oshawa Sign Team. In order to ensure its success, the committee would need to raise $350,000 by June 1, as well as another $125,000 by Sept. 1. The estimated maintenance cost for the sign would be $85,000 per year.
“Other cities have huge, illuminated signs, including Barrie, Hamilton, Kingston, and of course, Toronto’s famous Nathan Phillips Square,” said Fred Eismont, a member of the Oshawa Sign team. “So, why not Oshawa, and why not during our city’s centennial?”
Anyone who wishes to support to the initiative will receive a tax receipt for their donation. The city will facilitate the fundraiser, and if the committee does not reach the goal, all the money will be returned to the donors.
