Words at play: St. John’s brings inclusive sign boards to city playgrounds

The City of St. John’s has installed 30 new playground communication boards across the city to make play spaces more inclusive and welcoming for all children. Each sign board features two sides: one displays common playground words and symbols, and the other provides instructions for use.
City staff installed 24 boards in City-owned playgrounds and plan to add another soon. They also donated five boards to community organizations that supported the project or serve children who will benefit directly. These include the Autism Society, Ronald McDonald House, Easter Seals, the Janeway, and the Association for New Canadians.
The boards encourage inclusive play, social interaction, and language development.
The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador funded the project through its Accessibility Grant. The City’s Inclusion Advisory Committee also guided the design process.
The City encourages residents to share feedback on the communication boards, or on accessibility more broadly, by contacting inclusion@stjohns.ca.
