Wall of ‘Change’: New mural transforms Ontario city’s hospital entrance

A new mural titled Change now decorates the front entrance of the Outpatient Centre of Health Sciences North (HSN) in Sudbury, Ont.
Created by students and faculty from Cambrian College’s Design and Visual Arts program, the mural spans 18 m² (193.7 sf) across two walls. In particular, it features elements of the northern Canadian landscape—notably Atlantic salmon, mallard ducks, and a flowing river—which together reflect themes of seasonal transition and continuous movement.
“We are so pleased to collaborate with partners in the community annually to create these murals,” said Johanna Westby, professor in the Design and Visual Arts program. “This year’s project at the Sudbury Outpatient Centre was an opportunity for us to create a piece of artwork which enhances the space with calm and inviting colours and connection to the theme ‘Change’.”
Samantha Shadd, clinical manager for several programs at the centre, said the mural contributes positively to the facility. “The mural is beautiful and adds a nice touch to brighten up our space, inspire our staff, and help provide a calming space for patients and families.”
Cambrian’s Design and Visual Arts program recently created Change as the latest in its series of community murals. Other installations are at Tom Davies Square, Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School, Northeastern Elementary School, and Science North. The Sudbury Outpatient Centre hosts many HSN day clinics and outpatient services.
Public art in healthcare settings not only enhances the physical environment but also fosters a sense of connection, reflection, and healing within the community.
