Ontario hospital launches colour-coded wayfinding system
The project introduced a consistent, colour-coded symbol system throughout Hanover and District Hospital. The system allows individuals to identify departments and key areas within the building quickly.
The approach enhances accessibility, particularly for those experiencing language barriers or reading challenges, and supports a more inclusive environment.
Hospital staff developed the system in collaboration with clinical volunteers and members of the Patient and Family Advisory Committee. Their input helped ensure the signage is practical, intuitive, and aligned with the needs of patients and visitors.
A more welcoming environment
“The Wayfinding Project has made a meaningful difference for our patients and families,” said Dana Howes, President and CEO of Hanover and District Hospital. “Hospitals can feel overwhelming, especially during stressful moments, and having clear, colour-coded symbols throughout the building helps people get where they need to go more easily and with greater confidence. This improvement enhances accessibility for everyone, particularly those facing language barriers, and supports a more welcoming and patient-centred environment.”
Auxiliary President Ellen Edgington said the group is proud to support projects that directly enhance patient care and comfort, adding, “The Wayfinding initiative is a practical improvement that will benefit countless patients and visitors, and we are pleased to contribute to something that makes the hospital experience more positive and accessible for our community.”
The hospital expressed appreciation for the Auxiliary’s continued partnership, noting that community support plays a vital role in maintaining accessible care close to home.
