Amsterdam Brewing Co., entrusted Toronto-based custom sign manufacturer Roberts Signs & Awnings and Mackaywong, a strategy and design agency located in the city’s Entertainment District, with the task of adding a large signature marquee blade sign to their local brewpub in the North York neighbourhood of Leaside.
The aluminum signbox—located on the west elevation of the two-storey building—contains three faces, each displaying static copy. The 18-mm (0.7-in.) clear acrylic push-through letters sit flush against the deep red trim of the main structure and are illuminated by white light-emitting diode (LED) modules.
The aluminum square tube on the sign’s periphery consists of 112 brilliantly accented LED bulbs, which brighten the building’s facade.
The sign was mounted onto a steel post running vertically up the building and welded directly to the existing column, which was also attached to a new concrete surface via threaded rod anchors and Hilti-Hy 200 adhesive. The steel arms were then sleeved into the aluminum-structured sign cabinet and bolted internally.
All the fastening methods required necessary engineering documents, and the mounting techniques were in accordance with the Ontario Building Code.
