A new “Lest We Forget” sidewalk mural has been unveiled beside B.C.’s Port Coquitlam city hall and Veterans Park as the Royal Canadian Legion marks its 100th anniversary.

Port Coquitlam council members and representatives of Legion Branch 133 gathered on September 8 for the unveiling of the permanent mural along McAllister Avenue.

The red, black, and white design features a soldier and a maple leaf, along with the words “Lest We Forget.” The location is next to Veterans Park, where residents gather each year for the city’s Remembrance Day ceremony.

The idea for the mural came from Joseph Domingo, a former cadet with 777 Neptune Royal Canadian Air Cadets. “I’m proud that we live in a city where good ideas become reality,” Mayor Brad West said at the unveiling.

Coquitlam–Port Coquitlam MP Ron McKinnon said the mural recognizes the service and sacrifice of Canadian veterans. “This sidewalk shows the courage that service people had to go out into the world and stand up for freedom and democracy,” McKinnon told Freshet News. “The sidewalk is wonderful to have in Port Coquitlam.”

City staff came up with the design and Drip & Roll installed the mural.
