Monsters University display scares up sales at toy fair

Gatorfoam_ToyFair_FrontClosedEndFor the recent 2013 International Toy Fair in New York, N.Y., Underground Visuals promoted Disney/Pixar’s new Monsters University action figures with a monster-sized reproduction of one of the toys in its box.

Built using 3A Composites’ 12.7-mm (0.5-in.) thick Gatorfoam graphic display boards, the 2.4 x 3.7 x 0.6-m (8 x 12 x 2-ft) box allowed show attendees to step inside for a photo opportunity with Sulley, one of the movie’s lead characters.

Underground Visuals used an Océ Arizona 360GT flatbed press to print the display’s graphics onto the foam board, including the image of Sulley on the back wall, and die-cut the material with a Zund G3 digital cutter. The front wall and one side wall of the box were finished with Sabic Innovative Plastics’ clear Lexan sheets to mimic action figure packaging.

“It came together beautifully,” says Norman Scheffler, Underground Visuals’ owner. “The toy fair ran through an entire weekend and this display drew a lot of traffic.”
