CNC what you can do

Edmonton-based specialized sign shop Orca West is using a Camtech Z7 computer numerical control (CNC) router from Axyz Automation in Burlington, Ont., to cut signs and decals for the oil industry.

Owner Dan Boudreau explains he bought the machine after nearly 20 years in business because he was getting tired of waiting for other companies to cut Orca West’s designs, at a relatively high price. Reducing both the lead time and costs would lead to happier customers.

“I received the machine and within two days, a technician was getting it up and running,” he says, “and let me tell you, it runs nice. You turn it on and go to work. It never lets me down. And when I order bits or other consumables, they are there the next day.”

The entry-level, multi-function router is designed to cut various plastics, foams, metals and wood in both two dimensions (2-D) and three dimensions (3-D) in a standard 1.4 x 2.6-m (4.5 x 8.7-ft.) process area, so it can shape different components for the same sign.

“It’s a pleasure to run and easy to operate,” says Boudreau. “I don’t know what I would do without it!”
