Pattison Outdoor, which sells out-of-home (OOH) advertising throughout the Toronto Transit Commission’s (TTC’s) subway system, is currently showcasing posters on select platforms hand-painted by children and youth.

The company’s digital signage division, Pattison Onestop, partnered with Arts for Children and Youth (AFCY) to present the poster series, dubbed Art Responsibly. The participants reused expired subway posters provided by Pattison, painting over the old ads completely to create new works (example pictured), under the guidance of artists and AFCY’s free visual arts workshops.

“The posters are being used by youth to visually convey social messages and ideas that are important to them,” says Julie Frost, AFCY’s artistic and executive director.

The posters have been installed at subway stations near where they were made, including St. Patrick, College, Eglinton West, Kennedy, Wilson and Runnymede Stations. More will be installed across the TTC system until the end of this year.
