Ontario Premier Doug Ford unveiled a new sign declaring “Lake Ontario Now and Always” in Hamilton, following U.S. President Donald Trump’s move to rename the lake “Lake America.”

Speaking in Winona, Ford said the body of water would remain Lake Ontario.

He also took to social media, standing in front of the sign, saying, “I’m here on the shores of beautiful Lake Ontario, a crown jewel of our province and our country. You may have heard that President Trump is trying to rename this lake, all because he doesn’t like Ontario and Canada standing up for ourselves. But let’s be serious. Long before President Trump, this lake was called Lake Ontario. And long after President Trump is gone, it will still be called Lake Ontario. But just in case President Trump or anyone else forgets, we’ve set up this sign to remind them. It’s Lake Ontario, now and forever.”

Trump signed an executive order in late August changing the name amid growing tensions between Canada and the United States. The dispute comes as trade negotiations between the two countries have broken down.

Prime Minister Mark Carney has said the talks became untenable, while the federal government has announced retaliatory measures that began on September 8.

Ford said Saturday that several U.S. governors had contacted him and indicated they would continue to use the name Lake Ontario.

Lake Ontario borders Ontario and New York, and is one of the five Great Lakes.
