Today, AlterAction produces promotional displays for a range of both nationally and internationally known corporate clients.<\/p>\n

Taking a direct approach
\n<\/strong>The Lagu\u00ebs began exploring the niche field of high-resolution lenticular image interlacing, printing and finishing in the early 2000s.<\/p>\n

\u201cFirst and foremost, we were printers,\u201d says Alain. \u201cWe wanted to expand our range of services and provide distinctive and avant-garde products.\u201d<\/p>\n

They decided to invest in a Roland LEJ-640 hybrid UV light-emitting diode (LED) printer with \u2018eco\u2019 inks, which can output graphics on roll-based or rigid substrates up to 12.7 mm (0.5 in.) thick and 1.6 m (64 in.) wide.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe LEJ-640 has four printheads, which allow it to produce the high level of image resolution that is required for lenticular prints,\u201d Alain explains. \u201cThe graphics are consistently precise and vibrant.\u201d<\/p>\n

The main reason for choosing the hybrid printer, however, was the nature of lenticular graphics, which appear to move and change as the passerby\u2019s perspective shifts. Most lenticular art is created by printing the images onto paper, which is then adhered to a lens. This process can run into problems with dust encapsulation, however, such that the images may detach from the lens over time. The large-format hybrid printer addresses this issue by printing directly onto the lens instead, as the eco inks can stretch around edges, corners and curved surfaces.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe wanted to make sure the art pieces we produce will last over time,\u201d says Alain. \u201cPrinting directly on the lens eliminates the problem of the panels detaching.\u201d<\/p>\n

Preparing complex images<\/strong>
\nPrinting is only one part of the process, of course. The most complicated step is creating the lenticular art\u2014which may be based on original paintings, photographs or digital files\u2014in the first place.<\/p>\n

The pre-press stage can take anywhere from 15 to 35 hours, depending on the complexity of the visual effect to be achieved. The staff can create three-dimensional (3-D), animation, flip, morphing and zoom effects.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe printing is actually the easy part,\u201d Alain says. \u201cWe can always count on the graphic output being consistently excellent.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>The additional upfront effort is justified by the impact in the end. One case study involving a beverage company, which used lenticular displays for its products in three test stores, demonstrated 21 per cent of consumers who did not usually buy these products were attracted to the displays and thought they should give them a try. Further, when the company returned to the test stores 15 days later and asked customers if they remembered the displays, 91 per cent said \u2018yes,\u2019 31 per cent asked for more product information and 34 per cent could not remember what the competitor\u2019s conventional two-
\ndimensional (2-D) displays.<\/p>\n

Enhancing customer service
\n<\/strong>To help AlterAction\u2019s clients better understand the benefits of lenticular technology, the Lagu\u00ebs opened the LenticulArt Gallery, a combined art gallery and showroom in the front of their offices that is reportedly the largest of its kind. All of the art displayed there is available for sale, but it also demonstrates to prospective clients how lenticular technology could be used to animate their own graphics. The space can even be rented out for private cocktail receptions, accommodating up to 125 guests.<\/p>\n

More recently, the Lagu\u00ebs have launched Photo Ego, a new division of their business. A dedicated high-end photography studio, it allows them to better control the quality of the images they use for their lenticular art and, for that matter, provide a more seamless experience for their clients.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe find value in integrating our operations,\u201d says Alain. \u201cWe see the market for lenticular production continuing to grow in the future. We are ready to meet this growth as it happens.<\/p>\n
