A newly built stairway leading into the Halifax Harbour on the city’s waterfront is obtaining safety signage after several viral videos of people jumping into the ocean from the steps raised concerns for the safety of others.
According to a report from Global News, the steps, named Queen’s Landing, were part of the Queen’s Marque project built by Armour Group Limited at a price tag of nearly $200 million.
The steps are intended as a place to sit near the water, but people are now using them to go for a swim.
Spokesperson Deborah Page for Develop Nova Scotia said in a Tuesday interview with Global News, the crown corporation is responsible for the public space area, including the steps, in the Queen’s Marque along the waterfront.
Page said there is currently security monitoring the waterfront.
The new safety signage will be up within the next few weeks.
