TTC debuts 'next vehicle' signs

OneStop Media Group, which operates digital signage in the Toronto Transit Commission's (TTC's) subway system, is now expanding the network above-ground with the 'next vehicle arrival notification system.'

Extending the TTC's and OneStop's public-private partnership (PPP), the system's new signs will complement existing customer information and emergency messaging services.

“Everybody wants to know when the train or bus is arriving,” says OneStop CEO Michael Girgis. “We see this as win-win: TTC riders get valuable information and our advertisers increase the value of their impressions.”

The system is scheduled for installation in all subway stations before the end of this year. Liquid crystal displays (LCDs) inside stations list vehicles' estimated times of arrival (ETAs) and indicate their current positions on a real-time map, while light-emitting diode (LED) screens at bus and streetcar platforms list the next few arrival times.

Eventually, some 6,000 of the TTC's outdoor transit shelters will also be equipped with LED displays.

TTC chair Adam Giambrone presents the new LCDs, whose information is also available through mobile phone text messaging.
